November Monthly Compass

With the retirement stage of life lasting in the range of 25 years, for many, it is the longest of life stages. This months article, "Retirement can get old very fast", comes to us courtesy of The National Post. It highlights the fact that many Canadians are working longer for a variety of reasons. For many, it is because they want to, not because they have to. According to StatsCan, those who were age 50 in 2008 could expect to work another 16 years. This is 3.5 years longer than someone age 50 in the 1990's.  The great news is that improved life expectancy and quality of life is resulting in the retirement stage lasting just as long, meaning that delaying retirement isn't necessarily reducing the length of your retirement stage.

Protect Your Retirement with Income to Last a Lifetime

This month's article comes courtesy of Solutions Magazine and discusses a potential strategy for protecting your retirement income. The article discusses many of the risks faced by those who are retiring and or planning to retire in the next 10 years. These risks are the very ones we strive to help you overcome by:

  • Making sure you can afford to maintain your lifestyle
  • Making sure you have enough money to last as long as you live
  • Making sure you participate in the upside of the market while minimizing loses

For many, a comfortable retirement means not having to worry about your retirement income. With less than 1 in 4 Canadians having a defined pension income when they retire, creating an income stream that is protected and guaranteed to last your lifetime is a strategy worth considering. As always, your team of retirement specialists at Farwell Wealth Management are here to help you Retire On Your Own Terms. We invite you to contact us today to get the discussions started.

Retirement isn't just about money: 5 questions to consider.

This month's article comes from of Fox Business personal finance and provides 5 thought provoking questions that we at Farwell Wealth Management agree need to be discussed as you plan for your retirement. These questions are:

  • How am I going to spend my time and how will I make it count?
  • Do I have enough to live comfortably and have fun?
  • Should I downsize?
  • What if something happens to me or my spouse?
  • What about Health Care?

Though some of the content around the questions make reference to American social security and medicare issues, very similar issues and questions need to be asked by Canadians planning their retirement.  For instance, What about Health Care?  We too must consider the impact that changes in our health may have on our planned retirement lifestyle and the associated potential costs of prescription drugs and long term care.  By discussing issues such as these, we are able to help assess what strategies are available to help you minimize the risk this may pose for your retirement goals.
